Union of Auto Workers

Just a quick one today...
But I thought I'd share one of my favorite Editorial Comics: Michael Rameriez
I believe all his comics are very well drawn and thought out. And he reaches across the aisle... and makes fun of both sides!

Today's is particularly entertaining because it sums up my feelings regarding the Union of Auto Workers (UAW) very well.
Apparently one of the primary causes the bailout plans fell through were because the UAW refused to negotiate on any of their terms.
But their stance makes no sense to me. If they refuse to sacrifice, the entire auto industry collapses. When that happens they'll have no jobs, never mind decreased salaries and benefits...

Good Cop... but mostly Bad Cop

Here are a couple stories about police not quite doing their duty...

Officer from YouTube cyclist video pleads not guilty

"Officer Patrick Pogan was indicted Tuesday on three misdemeanor and two felony charges by Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau. He was released without bail.

The charges stem from a YouTube video clip showing Pogan body-checking cyclist Christopher Long from his bike during a ride by the group Critical Mass on July 25."

If you read to the bottom of the article, apparently the officer had graduated from the Academy just three weeks earlier. My guess is that he was high on power and decided he was above the law and could do as he pleases.
Although he'll probably only get a slap on the wrist for his actions, my hope is that they'll take away his badge for good. If he still yearns for authority, maybe he could become a mall-cop. At least he'd get a Segway...
Take a look at the actual video:

I can't believe he's pleading 'not guilty'.

Next is an article about a group called KopBusters.

"KopBusters rented a house in Odessa, Texas and began growing two small Christmas trees under a grow light similar to those used for growing marijuana. When faced with a suspected marijuana grow, the police usually use illegal FLIR cameras and/or lie on the search warrant affidavit claiming they have probable cause to raid the house. Instead of conducting a proper investigation which usually leads to no probable cause, the Kops lie on the affidavit claiming a confidential informant saw the plants and/or the police could smell marijuana coming from the suspected house.

The trap was set and less than 24 hours later, the Odessa narcotics unit raided the house only to find KopBuster’s attorney waiting under a system of complex gadgetry and spy cameras that streamed online to the KopBuster’s secret mobile office nearby."

I think this is awesome. While I do believe cops have the right to do their job, many times they go out of their way to bully people when there are more important things to do. And again, the police involved will most likely just get a warning or put on paid leave/desk duty. (Personally, I don't know how paid leave is a punishment).
Of course, the KopBusters methods could step over the line very quickly. For example, if they're baiting the police too aggressively, they could be forcing cops to devote resources to them when they could otherwise be actually helping the community.

Overall, I believe police have too much power and it is too often abused. However, even if there is a government agency devoted to police oversight, that agency itself is not free from corruption.
I guess we'll just have to have faith in human morality...

Movie Trailers (Told You It Was Coming!)

See? I did not lie.
I even managed to write two posts in two days!

Every once in a while I like to check up on upcoming movies on apple.com/trailers.
Sure YouTube has them too (and I will use it to post the trailers), but they're all in one place on apple.com and I can get them for my iPod there as well.
*Note: Click the movie title for the link to the apple.com page.

First up is Knowing, starring Nicholas Cage.
I'm not terribly interested in the movie, but it supposedly takes place in my hometown of Lexington, MA, so I have to at least show the teaser.

Next up is Ping Pong Playa.
Apparently the movie came out already. I had no idea it existed until I saw the trailer on apple.com... Now I have to find a theater that's showing it, or wait until the DVD comes out.

Last is Benecio del Toro's latest venture, a biopic on the life of Che Guevara.
It has been officially released (so it could make Oscar time), but will not see wider distribution until early 2009. It is over 4 hours long and will be broken up into two separate movies.

While it looks like a good movie and I will go to see it, I must obviously use this blog as my soapbox and complain about the fact that a large number of people view Che as a heroic figure.
I love a good revolution as much as the next guy, but I have two major problems with idolizing this man. 1) He was a socialist. While I do not agree with this form of government, this alone isn't enough to condemn the man. It's more of the fact that, 2) he was a cold blooded killer.
And yet people (particularly young adults who think they are 'hip') think it's fun to wear t-shirts with his face on it and Cuban/Chinese Communist hats.
Yes, I'm sure you have all seen them:

There are many more I could post, but I'll let you find the quality (and ridiculous) ones for yourself.
I'll get you started The Transporter 3 and I'll let you decide if this will be a quality or ridiculous film. *Hint: It's not quality.

Also, check out the nifty Search Box to the right!
When I've actually written enough posts for additional pages, it will help you find that ingeniously witty post you wanted to show all your friends!

Gay Rights

By now, I'm sure you have all heard about California passing Proposition 8, which restricted the definition of marriage to be between a man and a woman.
In case you're not familiar with it, here is the Wikipedia article summarizing the issue.

I recently came across this entertaining video from Funny or Die.
"Jesus Christ!" "Obamanation!"

Interestingly enough, it makes a few good points like how many conservatives pick and choose the bible teachings they want to take to heart. While I do not have a problem with this, how do you choose which are "outdated" and which you should still strictly follow?
If stoning your wife and eating shellfish have gone the way of Earth-flatness, maybe anti-gay beliefs should too.

On another note, coincidentally, the movie Milk came out two weeks ago (in select theaters).
I went to see it opening night and, surprisingly, enjoyed it immensely. I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much, not because I am anti-gay rights, but because I am not a huge fan of Sean Penn. In fact, most times I avoid all movies with him in it. But two of my friends wanted to go and it looked interesting enough.
James Franco and Emile Hirsch were excellent, as was Diego Luna (Y tu mama tambien)
All in all, it is an excellent movie that I highly recommend seeing. It's just too bad it didn't come out before Election Day and the vote on Prop 8.
