In the News: November 18, 2009

Let's start off with the important stuff:

Darth Vader Robotic Arm
Quite possibly the coolest Star Wars toy ever. I actually don't know how it works (that kid is turning knobs of some sort), but it looks awesome.

Plastic chemicals 'feminise boys'
This is pretty crazy...

"Chemicals in plastics alter the brains of baby boys, making them "more feminine", say US researchers.

Males exposed to high doses in the womb went on to be less likely to play with boys' toys like cars or to join in rough and tumble games, they found.

The University of Rochester team's latest work adds to concerns about the safety of phthalates, found in vinyl flooring and PVC shower curtains."
No washing vinyl floors or showering for my baby mama! It's gonna be a smelly 9 months...

"The same researchers have already shown that this can mean boys are born with genital abnormalities.

Now they say certain phthalates also impact on the developing brain, by knocking out the action of the male hormone testosterone."

I learned that I can put a break in my entries!
So here goes....
Read on after the break!

Whew. Made it to the other side in one piece.

New jihad code threatens al Qaeda
From last week, but still very interesting.

"From within Libya's most secure jail a new challenge to al Qaeda is emerging.

Leaders of one of the world's most effective jihadist organizations, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), have written a new "code" for jihad. The LIFG says it now views the armed struggle it waged against Col. Moammar Gadhafi's regime for two decades as illegal under Islamic law."

"The code's most direct challenge to al Qaeda is this: "Jihad has ethics and morals because it is for God. That means it is forbidden to kill women, children, elderly people, priests, messengers, traders and the like. Betrayal is prohibited and it is vital to keep promises and treat prisoners of war in a good way. Standing by those ethics is what distinguishes Muslims' jihad from the wars of other nations.""

Yes, I'm sure they still want an end to Western ways, but it appears their terrorist ways are winding down.

Iran sentences 5 to death for post-election protests

"Iran has announced it has sentenced five people to death and another 81 to prison terms of six months to 15 years for their roles in the protests that followed the country's disputed presidential elections.

The five who received death sentences on Tuesday were convicted of membership in terrorist groups and carrying out bombings across Iran, the Tehran judiciary said in a statement reported by state media.

The others were found guilty on various charges, including acting against the national interest, disturbing the peace and destroying public property."

And finally:
These guys just have bad luck...
Pirates foiled in a second attack on Maersk Alabama cargo ship

"A U.S.-flagged ship that played a central role in a bloody hijacking drama last spring was attacked again Wednesday, a busy day for piracy in the dangerous waters off the east coast of Africa.

It was the first time a security team aboard a major merchant ship repelled a pirate attack, a top U.S. Navy officer said."

"The Maersk Alabama came under automatic weapons fire from pirates about 350 nautical miles east of the Somali coast, the European Union's anti-piracy force said, but fought the attackers off."
