GraphJam

Another one of my regularly visited sites.

GraphJam combines graphs with comedy and wit and adds a touch of pop culture. What could be better?
I recommend starting with the older ones as they are more consistently funny and often reference classic songs.

But here are a few recent one's I've chuckled at:

Interview with Cookie Monster

NPR does a series of interviews with famous people called "In Character".

Here is one with the world famous Cookie Monster.

Some excerpts from the article:
"This week, NPR's In Character takes a look at a deeply sensuous character who speaks to our most basic appetites and desires.

That's right: Cookie Monster.

He's always been blue, always been furry, always been voracious. But he — or at least his predecessor — didn't always eat cookies."

"It was later, on a Muppet game show, that the cookie-fixated creature we know emerged, Oz says. The winning contestant was offered the chance to choose a prize: a vacation, a new house, $10,000 cash, or a cookie. He chose the cookie — and the Cookie Monster was born.

"As opposed to many of us who need many things to try and make us happy, he only needs one thing, and that's a cookie," Oz says. "That is his one obsession, and he's insatiable.""

"As part of their Healthy Habits for Life campaign, Sesame Street producers tried to rein in Cookie Monster's obsession a few years ago. Hootsy the Owl serenaded him with a little ditty called "A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food." There were rumors that he'd be replaced by a Veggie Monster.

It wasn't true, but angry fans inundated the Sesame Workshop with letters, and more than 3,000 people signed an online petition. "

And the video interview!:

How can you not love Muppets? It reminds me of this wonderful video between Ricky Gervais and Elmo.

Song of the Moment: Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest for the Wicked

Unfortunate Music

Run by an indie record label, this first site is devoted to sharing horrible demos they've received.
I guess if they've had to listen to them, they might as well spread the love (/pain?)!

Next up is the most annoying song ever: "The Most Unwanted Song"

"An online poll conducted in the ’90s set Vitaly Komar, Alex Melamid and David Soldier on a quest to create the most annoying song ever. After gathering data about people’s least favorite music and lyrical subjects, they did the unthinkable: they combined them into a single monstrosity, specifically engineered to sound unpleasant to the maximum percentage of listeners. The song is not new, but it resurfaced on Dial "M" for Musicology.

Amazingly, this "most unwanted music" contains little dissonance — that would have been too easy. For the most part, they seem to have tried to assemble these elements in a listenable way.

Komar & Melamid and David Soldier’s list of undesirable elements included holiday music, bagpipes, pipe organ, a children’s chorus and the concept of children in general (really?), Wal-Mart, cowboys, political jingoism, George Stephanopoulos, Coca Cola, bossanova synths, banjo ferocity, harp glissandos, oompah-ing tubas and much, much more. It’s actually a fascinating listen, worthwhile for the opera rapping alone. (We didn’t think that was possible either.)"

Trust me, it is truly awful.
When you first listen it really doesn't seem that bad, but 30 seconds in and you want to rip your hair out. I still haven't been able to make it all the way through.

If you find you really enjoy it, you can download it!

Police Brutality!
The past week has seen the exposure of two cases of policemen using "excessive force".

The first is in suburban LA. (click for video)
I'm not sure what happened to the officer in this case.

The second incident is in Birmingham, Alabama. (click for video 1, video 2)
Where all five of the officers were fired.

Now I'm not saying the suspects didn't deserve it. They are probably criminals and are obviously guilty of something if they are running from police.
But really, cops have to show some restraint here. They are supposed to be model citizens.

Komodo dragons kill with venom, not bacteria, study says

Researchers say the Komodo dragon has venom that keeps blood from clotting around its prey's wounds.

I've always been a fan of reptiles and thought this was an interesting find.
Previously, it was thought that Komodo dragons killed their prey by biting them and infecting the target with bacteria in their saliva and teeth. Then they wait for the prey to die and feast on the corpse.
Apparently there is now an alternative theory...

Why XX must think like XY to earn more K

Woman with bicep

"Women managers earn about £13,500 less than the average male manager, according to the most recent research. It's been estimated that at the current rate of change it will be 187 years before women get the upper hand."

There is also a quick survey to see if you think more like a male or female when it comes to salary.

NZ hunts accidental millionaires

A NZ$100 banknote (image from NZ Reserve Bank website)
Some of the money was recovered

"Police in New Zealand are searching for a couple who disappeared after a banking blunder deposited NZ$10m (£3.9m, US$6m) in their account."

"The couple had applied for a NZ$10,000 overdraft but received NZ$10m in their business account instead, part of which they withdrew, local media report."

Does this remind anyone else of that Community Chest card in Monopoly?
I don't remember there ever being a clause on the card saying you had to return it...

Polish priest publishes sex guide

A woman holds up a copy of Sex as you don't know it
Critics question the competence of a celibate monk to write about sex

"A Polish Catholic priest has published a book which provides married couples with a theological and practical guide to spicing up their sex lives."

"In the book that has been dubbed the "Catholic Kama Sutra", Father Knotz goes into graphic detail about a subject many in the Church consider taboo."

As the caption says, I'm not sure I would bother reading a book about sex written by a celibate priest.
Something tells me his knowledge doesn't come from experience...
Of course he might not be keeping his celibacy. Like good ol' Father Cutie.
